Suzu
This one’s a doozy! Today’s model is Suzu as she appears in Rift of the Necrodancer— a game which, at the time of this writing, isn’t actually out yet!
Though Suzu actually first appeared in Crypt of the Necrodancer’s Synchrony DLC, I didn’t take an interest in modeling her until I saw her redesigned appearance. I instantly fell in love with her style blending the sensibilities of modern streetwear with traditional Japanese aesthetics.
I decided she was a perfect candidate to tackle higher poly modeling along with several relevant challenges that wouldn’t be present in a lowpoly abstraction, providing myself with a well-rounded learning experience. I learned a lot working on this model, and I can’t wait to make more like it!
I’d also like to give a shoutout to the folks over in the Brace Yourself Games Discord server for providing me with a ref sheet almost immediately after I went asking about Suzu’s design. It’s a good thing too, because otherwise I never would’ve figured out how her coat looks from behind just based on the material I had on hand!
Thanks, guys!
I never would’ve made it this far without that sheet.
Since there were so many new lessons I learned during the production of this model, I’m planning to finish the full write-up at a later date. Expect documentation of shader setups, custom normals, and various challenges in the full article. See ya soon!
